The Doc Shiffer Recon is a flagship tactical folder that perfectly embodies the “overbuilt yet refined” philosophy of Steve “Doc” Shiffer. A veteran Army paramedic and Navy Corpsman, Shiffer draws on his real-world field experience to design tools that are robust enough for hard use but finished with the precision of a high-end custom. This specific Recon is a “Full Dress” build, utilizing a rare combination of Zirconium and Mokuti.
Elite Material Composition
-
Mokuti Scales: The handle scales are crafted from Mokuti (Titanium Damascus), which has been heat-treated to reveal a stunning, multi-tonal spectrum of blues and golds. This material offers the strength of titanium with an intricate, swirling aesthetic that is unique to every knife.
-
Zirconium Bolsters & Clip: The bolsters and pocket clip are made from Zirconium. When heat-treated, Zirconium develops a deep, glassy black oxide layer that is incredibly hard and scratch-resistant, providing a sophisticated, dark anchor to the vibrant Mokuti scales.
-
Blue-Anodized Liners: The internal Titanium liners are anodized a rich blue, providing a hidden pop of color along the spine and interior that ties into the blue highlights of the Mokuti.
The Artisan Blade: Hamon Finish
-
Hamon Detail: The blade features a genuine Hamon finish. This is achieved through a traditional differential heat-treatment process (often seen in Japanese katanas), where the spine is coated in clay before quenching. This results in a hard, sharp edge and a softer, tougher spine, with a visible “cloud line” (the Hamon) separating the two zones.
-
Blade Geometry: The Recon is famous for its broad, utilitarian profile with plenty of “belly,” making it an exceptional slicer that remains tough enough for tactical applications.
Condition and Mechanics
-
Condition: New from maker, meaning the delicate Hamon line and the high-polish Zirconium surfaces are in pristine, museum-grade condition.
-
Lockup: Set at a perfect 30%, ensuring a rock-solid engagement with a massive amount of life left for the lock bar.
-
Action: Shiffer’s custom Recons are known for their “buttery” manual action, typically running on high-grade bearings that allow the blade to glide open with minimal effort.
About the Maker
Steve “Doc” Shiffer, based in the USA, learned his craft under the mentorship of legendary makers like Mel Pardue and Jim Burke. Because he produces these in limited one-off configurations, finding a Recon with both a Hamon-finished blade and a full Zirconium/Mokuti dress is an exceptionally rare opportunity for collectors.
